Your menstrual cycle should generally be predictable, with manageable bleeding, minimal pain & relatively little fuss.
Unfortunately, that isn't the case for many women! If your periods have suddenly become irregular, heavier, lighter, longer, shorter or more painful, there's a reason behind those changes, and it's worth understanding WHY!
Conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, adenomyosis, uterine fibroids or thyroid dysfunction can affect your menstrual cycle at various stages of life.
However, if you're in your late 30s or 40s and your periods have started changing from their usual pattern, PERIMENOPAUSE could be the reason!
While it may feel like it, your period didn't suddenly go rogue! Your hormones are changing, and those changes can significantly affect your menstrual cycle.
Perimenopause is the hormonal transition leading up to menopause, which is officially reached after 12 consecutive months without a period, assuming there's no other medical explanation.
During perimenopause, your hormones don't simply decline in a nice, predictable pattern. They FLUCTUATE!
Here's what's happening. During the first half of your menstrual cycle, estrogen normally rises as your body prepares for ovulation. This helps build the uterine lining.
As you approach menopause, your ovaries become less responsive to hormonal signals from your brain. Estrogen production becomes more unpredictable, sometimes rising higher than usual before dropping again.
Ovulation also becomes less consistent. Some months you ovulate, while other months you may not.
Why does that matter?
After ovulation, your body normally produces progesterone, a hormone that helps regulate the uterine lining & support a predictable menstrual cycle.
When ovulation doesn't occur, you don't get that normal rise in progesterone. This means estrogen may continue stimulating the uterine lining without the usual balancing effects of progesterone. The lining can become thicker & shed unpredictably, contributing to heavier, longer or irregular periods.
You may also experience shorter cycles, skipped periods, spotting, breast tenderness, headaches, bloating or increased menstrual discomfort.
This is why a menstrual cycle that was once predictable can suddenly feel completely out of control!
But here's what makes perimenopause particularly challenging. These hormonal changes don't just affect your period! They can also influence your metabolism, mood, sleep, digestion, brain function, stress response, energy & body composition.
You may notice increasing anxiety, disrupted sleep, fatigue, brain fog or weight gain, particularly around your midsection.
Your body is going through a significant hormonal transition, and it deserves proper care & support!
However, it's important not to assume that every menstrual change is simply perimenopause. Fibroids, adenomyosis, thyroid conditions & other health concerns can cause similar symptoms.
New or persistent abnormal bleeding, particularly unusually heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods or bleeding after menopause, should be medically evaluated. Severe bleeding accompanied by dizziness, faintness or shortness of breath requires urgent medical attention.
If you're experiencing menstrual changes & want help understanding what may be contributing to them, I'd love to work with you! During a one-on-one appointment, we can take a closer look at your symptoms, health history, lifestyle & relevant lab results to explore possible contributing factors and discuss appropriate next steps, including any medical evaluation that may be needed.
Understanding what's happening in YOUR body is the first step toward knowing how to support it.This is why I encourage women to look beyond their symptoms & consider the bigger picture.
Are you nourishing your body with adequate protein & nutrient-dense foods? Supporting healthy blood sugar regulation? Building & maintaining muscle through strength training? Prioritizing restorative sleep & managing stress?
These foundational habits matter, particularly during perimenopause when your hormones, metabolism & body composition are changing.
Of course, lifestyle changes aren't a substitute for investigating underlying medical conditions or receiving appropriate treatment. But they can play an important role in supporting your overall health during this transition.
You don't have to simply accept feeling miserable or completely unlike yourself!
You deserve education, understanding & support so you can make informed decisions about your health.
