Are you in your mid-to-late 30s or early 40s?
If so, you may think you're too young to be experiencing perimenopause. YOU AREN'T!
Perimenopause can begin several years before menopause, sometimes as early as your late 30s or early 40s. For many women, this transition lasts approximately 4 years, although it can be considerably shorter or longer.
You could be experiencing it RIGHT NOW without even realizing it!
So, what's the difference between perimenopause & menopause?
Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause. During this time, your reproductive hormones, particularly estrogen & progesterone, begin fluctuating. These hormonal changes can affect everything from your menstrual cycle & sleep to your mood, metabolism & energy levels.
Menopause is officially reached when you've gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, assuming there's no other medical explanation.
Here's what makes perimenopause particularly confusing. Your hormones don't simply decline in a nice, predictable pattern. Estrogen can fluctuate considerably, while progesterone production may become less consistent as ovulation changes.
This means you might feel fantastic one week & completely unlike yourself the next!
Common symptoms of perimenopause can include:
Menstrual & hormonal changes: Irregular or heavier periods, breast tenderness, hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, reduced libido & painful sex.
Mood, brain & sleep changes: Anxiety, irritability, mood swings, brain fog, low motivation, fatigue & difficulty falling or staying asleep.
Weight & metabolic changes: Increased abdominal fat, changes in body composition, insulin resistance & unfavorable changes in cholesterol levels.
Skin, hair & physical changes: Dry or itchy skin, thinning hair, increased facial hair, joint discomfort, headaches, migraines & changes in skin elasticity.
Other possible symptoms: Urinary urgency, recurrent UTIs, bloating, digestive changes, heart palpitations & tinnitus. Some women also report less commonly discussed experiences such as itchy ears, changes in body odor, frozen shoulder or unusual tingling sensations.
Here's something I REALLY want you to understand. Just because you're still having regular periods doesn't mean you can't be experiencing perimenopausal changes!
Your hormones can begin fluctuating before you notice significant changes to your menstrual cycle.
Unfortunately, many women experiencing these symptoms are told they're too young, simply stressed or that everything is normal.
While hormonal changes during this stage of life are natural, that doesn't mean you have to ignore your symptoms or accept feeling miserable!
It's also important to recognize that not every symptom in your late 30s or 40s is necessarily caused by perimenopause. Thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency, blood sugar dysregulation, chronic stress & other health concerns can produce overlapping symptoms.
This is why understanding what's happening in YOUR body is so important!
Rather than simply guessing, I encourage women to look at the bigger picture.
Are you eating enough protein & nourishing your body with nutrient-dense foods? Are you strength training to support muscle mass, metabolic health & bone strength? Are you prioritizing sleep, managing stress & supporting healthy blood sugar regulation?
These foundational habits can make a meaningful difference in how you feel as your hormones change.
For some women, additional evaluation or medical treatment, including menopausal hormone therapy when appropriate, may also be beneficial.
Perimenopause isn't something to fear, but it IS something worth understanding!
The more you understand your body & the changes taking place, the better equipped you'll be to support your health through this transition and beyond.
If you're struggling with weight gain, fatigue, disrupted sleep or other changes that are making it difficult to feel like yourself, I'd love to help you take a more proactive approach to your health.
